Streamline Training With Video Conference Recording
Streamline training with video conference recording
Whether you're building or expanding a team, effective training materials make all the difference. Video-based content is an especially powerful learning tool because when given a bit of time, the average human brain recalls video more easily than text. One useful and economical way to create this kind of effective training content is through video conference recording: a format that makes it easy to build a catalog of virtual training tools that includes online classes, lectures, how-to videos and instructive conversations.
The tool we'll use for this example for how to make online training videos is Jitsi, the free video conferencing software that forms the core of 8x8's video meeting solutions. It's easy and straightforward to use Jitsi for online video training.
Video conference recording with Jitsi
Jitsi integrates with YouTube to make the contents of a video conference widely accessible, essentially creating a recorded livestream. The process has two basic stages.
Get a stream name/key from YouTube
The first step is to make sure you have a YouTube account and channel. You can use any Google account to watch videos on YouTube, but you'll need to create a channel to upload content. Fortunately, that's a user-friendly process.
Once you have your channel:
- Click your avatar on the top right of the screen to go to the channel dashboard
- Click "Create," the camcorder icon, at the top right
- Click "Go Live" to go to your Studio
- Scroll down to "Encoder Setup" and click the "Reveal" button beside the hidden "Stream Name/Key" field
- Copy the contents of the "Stream Name/Key" field
The first time you livestream or use your creator's studio, you'll need to verify your channel, a process you can complete quickly on YouTube.
Start your Jitsi conference
Start your Jitsi conference as a moderator. Click the live streaming button on your toolbar, and enter the stream name/key that you copied from YouTube.
You'll see a "Stream Starting" message, and the resulting conferences will be streamed and archived on your YouTube channel. It's that simple. If you get an error message at this stage, just retry until it connects.
Please note that if your Jitsi Meet is self-installed, you'll need to be running Jibri to do this. Consult with your in-house IT professional about whether that's needed and how to do it.
The uses of video conference recording
Recorded video conferences are excellent for a variety of virtual training tools. Some of the ways you can use this recorded content include:
- Micro-learning that delivers information in small, digestible 3-minute chunks
- Online training videos as part of a larger web-based learning program
- Interviews and testimonials
- Documenting case studies
- Conducting webinars
Whatever format you use and whatever kind of training program you use it in, video is an indispensable online learning tool. The brain processes video much faster than text, which makes it an excellent medium for delivering fundamental and unified messages.
